OBJECTIVES AND CONTENTS

Within the Naples Shipping Week 2022, the research group in Urban Planning of the Institute for Research on Innovation and Services for Development of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR IRISS), coordinated by Massimo Clemente, is committed to develop the issues of sustainable development of coastal urban areas through the enhancement of the city’s maritime culture, as a representation of the collective memory. The research path is strongly rooted in the study activities of the Institute as well as in the history of the Naples Shipping Week.

In 2012, the first results of these interdisciplinary research activities were presented on the occasion of the first conference “The sea and the city”. In the second conference, in 2013, a debate started with associations, citizens and scholars on a shared project for the sustainable development of the metropolitan coastal area of Naples. Since 2014, over the different editions of the Naples Shipping Week, this research path has continued in cooperation with the Port System Authority of the Central Tyrrhenian Sea and RETE – International Association for the Collaboration between Ports and Cities, through research and debate on the sustainable development of the sea-coast-port-city-community system.

In this perspective, the conference “The sea and the city 5.0”, which will mark the opening of the NSW 2022, will start with a debate between the Mayors of national and international port cities. The second part of the day will focus on deepening the interdependencies between “The sea and the coast” and “The port and the city”, through the contribution of diverse disciplines, including law, management, economics, engineering, marine biology, urban planning, evaluation, and community psychology.
